DUNDEE ROLLER GIRLS – Dundee, Scotland
Dundee Roller Girls are represented by two travel teams; the Silvery Tayzers (our All Star A team) and our B team of developing talent – the Bonnie Colliders and three home teams (Jutes of Hazard, Press Gangsters and Jammin’ Dodgers). The Home Teams’ names reference aspects of Dundee life and history often summed up as jam, jute and journalism.
Roller derby started In Dundee in March 2009 with the formation of the Dundee Destroyers, the fourth Scottish league to appear after Glasgow Roller Derby (GRD, formerly Glasgow Roller Girls), Auld Reekie Roller Girls (ARRG) and Granite City Roller Girls (GCRG). The Dundee Destroyers became the Dundee Roller Girls at the start of 2011.
From humble beginnings in a car-park, roller derby in Dundee has grown to support a nationally competitive travel team with a European ranking. Celebrating their first Home Teams’ season in 2014, The DRG boasts a varied roster of skaters who continue to push to make the league bigger and better. The success and determination of The DRG is reflected in the number of current and ex-DRG skaters who made the final Team Scotland selection for the 2014 Blood and Thunder World Cup in Dallas, Texas.
The league also support a ‘herd’ of dedicated, nationally and internationally renowned officials – referees and non skating officials (NSOs) – as well as enthusiastic volunteers and fans.
Remaining entirely skater-run, volunteers organise every aspect of the team, from training to games, travel to PR, merchandise to fundraising. Running regular open-scrimmages (both female-only and co-ed), The DRG supports the wider development of roller derby across Scotland, as well as providing a developed training plan for anyone local who wants to take part in the sport whether as a skater or an official.
